This campaign turned €23,000 into real health action – bringing liver scanning, advice, and awareness directly to communities across Ireland.
Introduction
In August and September 2025, Liver Ireland Support Network (LISN), in partnership with the Irish Liver Foundation (ILF) and supported by Sharp Services, delivered Ireland’s first free mobile liver scanning campaign.
The “LISN To Your Liver” campaign brought quick, non-invasive liver health checks directly into communities in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and Sligo.
For many people, this was the first time they had ever thought about their liver health or had it checked.
How the Funding Made a Difference
The €23,000 donation from Sharp Services made this campaign possible. It supported:
- Mobile scanning setup (gazebos, transport, equipment)
- Public awareness and information materials
- Volunteer coordination and training
- Event organisation across five locations
- Data collection and follow-up systems
Without this support, over 300 people would not have had access to this service, many for the very first time.
What Happened During the Campaign
People attending the events were offered a free FibroScan® , a simple, painless test that takes just a few minutes and provides a liver risk score.
They also completed a short lifestyle questionnaire covering diet, exercise, and alcohol use.
Afterwards, each person received clear guidance:
- Reassurance where appropriate
- Advice to visit their GP if needed
- Information on improving liver health
- Referral to hepatology clinic if required
What We Found
Who We Reached
- Total participants: 347
- Average age: 53
- Gender: 61% female, 37% male
- Strong engagement across multiple regions
- Over 95% consented to share their data
This shows strong public interest in accessible health checks.
Concern About Liver Health
- 37% said they were worried their liver might be damaged
This shows that many people already have concerns but don’t always know where to turn. Many participants were likely motivated to attend out of concern, demonstrating the campaign’s success in driving awareness.
Health Risk Factors
- 56% had a BMI over 25
- 26.5% had high blood pressure
- ~6% had Type II diabetes
More than half of those scanned were in higher-risk categories for liver disease.
Diet and Lifestyle Habits
- 66% ate takeaway or processed food more than once per week
- 55% reported frequent snacking on unhealthy foods
These everyday habits can have a real impact on liver health over time.
Alcohol Awareness and Behaviour
- Many participants reported drinking several times per week
- 29% do not take 3 alcohol-free days per week
- Very few were aware of safe drinking guidelines
This highlights a clear gap in awareness about alcohol and liver health.
Real Impact on People
Beyond the numbers, the campaign made a difference in people’s lives:
- Many participants had never had a liver check before
- Some were advised to follow up with their GP for further care
- Others reported planning changes to diet, exercise, or alcohol use
The campaign didn’t just raise awareness, it prompted action.
Why This Matters
Liver disease is often called a “silent disease” because it can develop without symptoms until it is serious.
It is closely linked to:
- Diet and weight
- Family history
- Alcohol use
- Conditions like diabetes
The good news is that early detection can prevent or even reverse damage.
This campaign showed that:
- People are willing to engage when services are easy to access
- Many at-risk individuals are not currently being identified
- Community-based screening can play a key role in prevention
Challenges
Delivering a nationwide campaign on a limited budget came with challenges:
- Coordinating volunteers and medical staff
- Managing logistics across multiple locations
- Transporting and setting up equipment
Despite this, the campaign reached hundreds of people and delivered strong results.
Looking Ahead
The success of the “LISN To Your Liver” campaign shows what is possible.
With continued support, this initiative could:
- Reach more communities across Ireland
- Help detect liver disease earlier
- Support people in making healthier choices
- Reduce pressure on the healthcare system
This campaign is a strong first step toward a healthier future for liver health in Ireland.
