One year on, Remembering our Co-Founder and Chairman, Brendan McAtamney

On 21st December, we mark one year since the passing of our Co-Founder and Chairman, Brendan McAtamney, who died peacefully at St. Vincent’s University Hospital following an illness courageously fought. As we reflect on this milestone, we remember a remarkable leader whose vision, spirit and strength of purpose continue to shape the work of LISN today.

Brendan achieved much in his life, but beyond accolades and accomplishments, what truly set him apart was his indomitable spirit – an infectious energy, sharp humour and fierce determination that defined every chapter of his life. He led with confidence and clarity, bringing people together through his passion and exceptional strength of character.

LISN is a living legacy of Brendan’s will: his will to live, his will to support others, and his deep commitment to giving back following his liver transplant. That legacy is evident in the patients and families we support, in our respect for liver donors and their families, and in the growing transplant community across Ireland.

We are proud to share that LISN achieved full charitable status this year, a milestone Brendan was aware of before his passing and one of his final actions as Chairman. This achievement stands as a testament to his leadership, rigour and belief in building a sustainable organisation that would endure well beyond him.

As we mark one year on, we do so with renewed commitment to Brendan’s original intention and vision: to ensure that no liver transplant patient or family walks their journey alone. His values, standards and humanity remain at the heart of everything we do.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Brendan’s daughter and LISN Director, Aisling, reflected:

“I am deeply proud to be here, not only as Brendan’s daughter, but also as a Director of LISN, continuing our family’s belief in building a community that provides support and hope for the transplantees of Ireland – and for the families who walk alongside them.”

The Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers of LISN remain steadfast in honouring Brendan’s legacy through action – advocating for donor awareness, caring for patients and families, and upholding the trust placed in us by our community and supporters.

We would like to sincerely thank the Irish Liver Foundation (ILF) and the Royal Victoria Liver Support Group for the generosity with which they shared their expertise with Brendan in the early days of LISN, and for the guidance and collaboration they continue to offer as we carry his vision forward.

Over the past year, LISN has been deeply moved by the outpouring of messages, goodwill and generosity shared in Brendan’s memory. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who has honoured his life through donations made in his name. We wish to extend particular thanks to Sharp and Inizio for their exceptional generosity, which has enabled LISN to further its work and continue delivering on Brendan’s vision with care and integrity.

One year on, Brendan’s presence is still felt – in our purpose, our resolve, and in the enduring belief that compassion, leadership and courage can change lives.
